Weapons and explosives included 62 Brimstone missiles – the precision laser-guided missiles have a range of up to 25km and can target fast-moving vehicles and swarming drones.

Squadron Leader Shepperd, 37, said: “We all feel the importance of these flights.

“We know that Europe’s security is at stake.

“We follow the news, we see how quickly the situation in Ukraine is changing and we know that we are part of the British contribution.”

Co-Pilot Flight Lieutenant Searle, 32, said: “I think it’s the delivery of vital assistance, whether humanitarian or fatal, that has an immediate impact.

“The impact it will have and knowing that you are contributing is amazing.

“I’m a fairly new pilot. This is my first operational role.

“It’s a goal that you work towards your whole life, so actually achieving that goal and working in an operational environment right away is incredible.”

Small arms and vehicle parts were also found on the flight which left RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, on Friday evening.

Just a few weeks ago, the aircraft with registration number ZZ177 transported the Queen’s coffin from Edinburgh to London’s RAF Northolt.

It has also played a role in rescuing hundreds of refugees fleeing the Taliban in Kabul, Afghanistan, in August 2021.

More than 100 flights have been operated by the RAF since war was declared in February during an operation codenamed Scorpius.
