Angry Manchester United fans say Mason Greenwood should no longer play for the club after charges against him were dropped

Angry Manchester United fans last night said the club should boot out Mason Greenwood – even though all criminal charges against him have been dropped.
Ian Stirling, board member of the Red Devils’ fan-run Supporters’ Trust, tweeted: “There’s no way he should be playing for us again.”

Greenwood said he was “relieved” yesterday after all criminal charges against him – including attempted rape – were dropped by prosecutors.
The Man United star was informed that prosecutors had also dropped charges of actual assault and coercive or controlling conduct.
The move came after 12 witnesses – including the woman at the center of the allegations – refused to cooperate.
Forward Greenwood, 21, said: “I’m relieved this matter is over and I want to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.”
However, United bosses announced the club is now conducting its own investigation into its behavior in relation to the claims – which surfaced online in January 2022.
Greenwood – who the club suspended after his arrest – will not be able to train or play for the Red Devils for the duration.
A spokesman said: “The club will now conduct its own process before determining the next steps.
“We will have no further comment until this process is complete.”
Last night scores of United fans urged the club to ditch Greenwood – on a £100,000-a-week contract.
Others said they should stand by him as he had not been convicted of any crime.
He was arrested in January 2022 after harrowing images, along with video and audio footage, were posted on social media suggesting he had physically abused a woman.
He was charged last October and was due to appear in court this November.
The charges came despite the alleged victim telling police in April 2022 they no longer wanted him to be prosecuted and would not testify in court.
Police continued the case as they considered her a “vulnerable victim”.
Last Friday, The Sun told the CPS that we understand it is struggling to make a case.
She confirmed our information at 2 p.m. yesterday when the end of the procedure was announced.
A CPS spokesman said: “A combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction.
“We have explained our decision to all parties.
“We would always encourage all potential victims to come forward and report to the police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is passed.”
Greenwood has made 129 appearances for United, scoring 35 goals and earning one cap for England.
He last played against West Ham on January 22 last year.
Before his arrest, he was valued at around £50million and is considered one of the hottest young talents in European football.
