Food stamps can be used to buy gift baskets containing chocolates, candies, and other foods – but there’s a catch, according to United States Department of Agriculture.

Bosses say the non-food portion of the basket should not exceed 50 percent of the total bill.

However, if the basket mainly consists of meat and cheese, and contains a small toy, for example, then SNAP benefits can be used to purchase them.

USDA bosses warn that the price of the bin or basket is included when determining the cost of non-food items.

Food stamps cannot be used to purchase gift baskets containing any amount of alcohol and tobacco.

Americans can use SNAP to pay for a birthday cake, but the value of non-food items cannot exceed 50 percent of the total cost.

Beneficiaries can also use their food stamps to purchase energy drinks if it is labeled “Nutrition Information”.

Parents can use SNAP payments to buy baby food, baby formula and juice, according to the USDA.

Food stamps worth up to $1,504 are now available for thousands of residents in Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Social Justice announced earlier this month that additional funds will be made available to those who qualify for food stamps.

It said an additional $1,504 will be automatically added to the beneficiary’s Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card on Sunday, January 16.

Households will qualify if they have a current bank balance (combined savings and checks) of less than $2,001.

The federal program ensures households facing tough times can still put healthy and nutritious food on the table.

Food stamps are delivered monthly via an electronic debit card, which can be used at more than 238,000 retailers nationwide.

SNAP benefits already provided permanently increase last year. Medium, food stamps increased $36 per person to $157.

But how much food stamps you get will also depend on your family size and the state you live in.

SNAP households are expected to spend about 30% of their own cash on food.
