American Idol Season 20 Premiere Recap: Watch Platinum Ticket Trial

“Hail Mary, full of grace, let Kelly Clarkson appear.” It was Katy Perry’s prayer at the top of Sunday’s season of American Idoland while everyone knows that the Bible promises us only one Clarkson in this lifetime, we’re still watching a bunch of new singers try to match her greatness.

With Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie back on the board for the fifth year, Idol celebrate another major milestone – the 20th (!) anniversary of the franchise – with the introduction of Platinum Tickets™, ticket recipients can make it through to the first round of Hollywood Week.

(If that doesn’t sound like much, you’re clearly forgetting the absolute nightmare that is Hollywood Week.)

The first of three such tickets is awarded to HunterGirl, a 23-year-old music therapist who works with veterans, turning their traumatic stories into beautiful songs. Her confident, authentic performance on Rascal Flatts’ “Riot” led Bryan to call her the “New Age Miranda Lambert”, someone with the “favorite country female voice” he had heard on the show. for half a decade Idol. So it’s appropriate that the judges give HunterGirl good news at 32 Bridge in Bryan’s very own Nashville bar. Hit PLAY on the video above to watch her audition.

Read on for a breakdown of other successes from Sunday’s launch. And don’t let you doubt how fierce the competition is this season, never forget that Aretha Franklin’s niece not even surpassing Hollywood.

NOAH THOMPSON, 19 years old | That’s right, this charming construction worker got a well-deserved golden ticket for his raw, emotional performance on Kameron Marlowe’s “Giving You Up.” But greater honor was bestowed upon the man who had submitted to him, Thompson’s colleague Arthur, whom Richie considered a true woodworker’s angel. Watch:

NORMANDY, 29 | Even Perry admitted that she rolled the dice by sending the cartoon about this person to Hollywood. Apparently mesmerized by the gamer’s quirky style, complete with a carrot wallet lying in Perry’s cupboard, the judges seemed to purposely overlook that her performance in “Proud Mary” Tina Turner’s is… not really good. Once you get past the gimmick that her voice sounds different from hers, there really isn’t much there.

NICOLINA BOZZO, 18 years old | The premiere’s first OK-now-we’re talking moment comes courtesy of this Toronto-based college student who punched the judges in their collective guts with his powerful portrayal of her in Sara Bareilles’ Broadway musical “She Used to Be Mine” Waitress. It’s a song that’s been done to death, but she brings something new to the dramatic ballad, taking advantage of every advantage to showcase her range and control. Besides, I was oddly pleased to see Perry lip-syncing to the song. Waitress The fans are good people. Click here to watch.

TYLER ALLEN, 24 years old | It’s impossible not to be emotional for this young uncle, whose audition was in tribute to his one-year-old grandchild, who recently died in a car accident. Knowing that Allen sang the same Whitney Houston song he sang while rocking that little baby to sleep, you can hardly blame Perry for sobbing through the entire ordeal. Like the judges, I appreciated the subtlety of Allen’s performance. It is truly a lost art. Watch:

COLE HALLMAN, 22 years old | To be honest, finding out that Hallman works as a surf shop employee comes as no surprise. He has an easy cool atmosphere about him, like I was too scared to ask him for help if I found myself browsing his establishment. But that’s my problem. Either way, even a guitar out of tune couldn’t stop him from shining in the form of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lodi,” the perfect song to showcase his classical sound. That performance, along with a nice little encore of The Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with his sister, earned him an instant spot on the list. my track. No waiting in line, just step to the front. Click here to watch.

DELONEY RENEE, 18 years old | This nanny doesn’t think she’s qualified to audition Idol… Until the mother of the girl she was following secretly recorded her singing a song from Little Mermaid. The video went viral on TikTok overnight and Idol Immediately contact to set up an audition. Renee has earned three yess to Sia’s powerful performance of “Chance” since 2014 Annie rework, do it again. So at least one good thing comes from that movie. Click here to watch.

TAYLOR FAGINS, 26 years old | Idol saved my favorite audition for the last time, introducing America to this beautiful soul who treated us all with a great original song about police brutality and ruthlessness. hope that so many black boys and girls feel today. The beautiful song itself, the lyrics and the emotion took the whole experience to the next level. Listening to Fagins sing his heart out at the piano is the perfect way to end a solid debut. Watch:
