Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board hears staffing and security concerns – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Staffing and inmate safety concerns were the topics of discussion at an Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board hearing.

However, frustration mounted because some board members and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald were absent from the hearing.
The Prison Officers Union President said there is a crisis in the prison due to staffing issues.

“We have 28 officers who have been on duty for a year and have worked over 1,700 overtime hours in the last month, 1,700 overtime hours,” said Brin Englert, the union chairman. “That’s 70 hours a month.”
“People are dying, people are sick, people are losing their legs in prison, and we have officers acting as medical staff,” said Tanisha Long, a local activist.

Allegheny County is hosting a virtual careers fair next week and there are at least 44 open positions.
