Rebecca (2020)

James stars with Armie Hammer in gothic mystery Rebecca available on Netflix. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, director Ben Wheatley wanted to follow suit for his film. The 1940 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock also adapted the book and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Hammer plays Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widow who befriends James’ character, and the pair fall in love. She becomes the next Madame de Winter and moves into Manderley’s beautiful mansion. As the new owner of the house learns more about the former owner, Rebecca, things take a turn, and many are shocked by all that is revealed.

Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)

Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society is a Netflix original series set on the island of Guernsey in 1946, after the German occupation. The film is based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

It is a beautiful story about a British journalist, Juliet Aston (James), who travels to Guernsey after meeting a member of a literary club called Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society. This society was formed when four people traveled after curfew and arrived to avoid arrest. Their story so amazed Aston, she decided to write about society and the people involved.

The Dig (in 2021)

Netflix Original Movies Dig, set in 1939 in Suffolk, is a British television series directed by Simon Stone based on the novel of the same name by John Preston. James stars with Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, Archie Barnes and Monica Dolan in this film, based on a true story.

On the eve of World War II, wealthy widow Edith Pretty (Mulligan) hires self-taught archaeologist, Basil Brown (Fiennes), to investigate mysterious mounds on her estate. Brown and his crew discover something of historical significance. James plays Peggy Piggott, one of the archaeologists assisting in the dig.

Dig received positive reviews from critics and was nominated for five British Academy Film Awards.

Downton Abbey (2010-2015)

Downton Abbey is a series of films created by Julian Fellowes that follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their lives, as well as the lives of their domestic servants, who live at Downton Abbey, a fictional estate in Yorkshire.

The series highlights many important events in history between 1912-1926, including the sinking of the Titanic, World War I, the Spanish Flu pandemic, and the decline of the English aristocracy.

James joined the series in season 3 as Lady Rose MacClaire, a second cousin sent to live with the Crawleys while her parents served in India. The series consists of six seasons and one film, with the second coming out in 2022.

Darkest Hour (2017)

Movie Darkest hour Directed by Joe Wright and written by Anthony McCarten, it tells the story of Winston Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

It stars Gary Oldman as Churchill, Kristin Scott Thomas as Clementine Churchill, Lily James as Elizabeth Layton, Stephen Dillane as Viscount Halifax, Ronald Pickup as Neville Chamberlain, and Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI.

Darkest hour takes its name from a phrase attributed to Churchill as used to describe the early days of World War I.
