“All because of him”

ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE praised Mikel Arteta for managing Arsenal’s promotion to the top four.

After finishing eighth last season, many expected the Gunners to be fighting for a Europa League spot at best.

But after a nightmarish start, they have put in a good run of results and are now fourth with ten games to go.

Arsenal are three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham and four ahead of Manchester United – with a game in hand on both.

And Lacazette, who has led the line and captain since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s snub and eventual exit, was quick to pay tribute to the Spain boss.

The Frenchman told Mundo Deportivo: “We’re focused on finishing in the top four.

“We want to take the team to the Champions League next season. We’ve been working on it all week and it’s working for now.

“We want to continue like this and work hard every day to play well at the weekend.

“Arteta is the leader, the boss, even the boss of the club.

“A lot of things have changed since he arrived, including everyone’s mentality … it’s all because of him.”

Lacazette is clearly enjoying his role in the squad, allowing youngsters Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli to thrive behind him.

However, there is still uncertainty about his future as his contract expires this summer and he could therefore leave on a free transfer.

For Arteta, who celebrated his 40th birthday on Saturday, he is happy with how things are going at the moment.

And as SunSport revealed, Arsenal want to reward their gaffer with a new contract.

The manager, who took his first managerial job at the Emirates in December 2019, told the club’s website: “Well going into management I had a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve with Arsenal.

“I wanted to build a winning team that is also financially sustainable and that can convey the values, identity and passion that the club has had over the years.

“To do this we had to make some important decisions and steer the club in the right direction so that we can achieve this in the long term.

“There were some very difficult decisions to make. You need a lot of support within the club to do that and then the decisions have to be right.”
