Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan’s rivalry took an ugly turn at UFC 259
At UFC 259, Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan finally crossed paths inside the octagon.
Sterling entered the fight as the challenger, with Yan defeating Jose Aldo at UFC 245 to claim the UFC bantamweight title. However, in a pay-per-view situation, Yan illegally punched Sterling with his knee, leading to ‘No Mercy’ being disqualified.
DQ means Aljamain Sterling has been crowned UFC’s new bantamweight champion in a very controversial way. However, since winning this title, Sterling has not once stepped inside the octagon to defend his belt.
Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan were set to rematch at UFC 267. However, ‘Funk Master’ was forced to withdraw from the fight due to injury, as ‘No Mercy’ continued to compete for the UFC’s interim bantamweight title.
At UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, Petr Yan took on Cory Sandhagen for the UFC interim bantamweight title. Yan and Sandhagen put together one of the best games of 2021 with the undisputed former champion once again touching gold.

With Petr Yan winning the interim belt, a reunification match between him and Aljamain Sterling is expected at some point in the near future. Currently, the official battle date is yet to be confirmed.
