THE LEGEND OF Godzilla actor Akira Takarada has passed away at the age of 87.
The Disney voice star is said to have passed away in Japan on March 14.
In a statement, Toho Studios said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Akira Takarada. May his memory continue to inspire the lives of many Godzilla fans. “
It is unknown how Takarada died.
The actor appeared in the 1956 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Raymond Burr.
He also appeared in the 1992 sequel and 2004 film Godzilla: Final Wars.
Takarada is the voice of the main character in Dr. Doolittle and starred in the Disney film Aladdin, voicing Jafar.
Dozens of tributes were paid to the actor and voice star.
Filmmaker Yoko Higuchi said: “The love this man has for Godzilla is immense and I feel it every time he talks about the series. He loves Godzilla. Godzilla misses him.”
Fans online said that Takarada “will forever go down as a legend”.

Takarada was born in Korea while the country was under Japanese rule in 1934.
He moved to Japan in 1948 and became a popular actor at the Toho production company.
He appeared in the films Half-Human, The Last War and King Kong Escapes.
He worked alongside Broadway star Harold Rome as he prepared his 1970 theater production of Gone with the Wind.
