Using the power of Google Maps, GeoGuessr generates random locations, asking you to map where you think you are in the world.

You get points based on how close you are to the exact location.

Streaming players on Twitch and YouTube are also growing because of it, including Sidemen, GeoWizard and Vikkstar123, with millions of viewers.

The game has actually been in development since 2013 but gained momentum from 2020 onwards as people looked for something to do during the lockdown.

It becomes competitive against online friends.

It all started to happen when Swedish IT genius Anton Wallén wrote on Reddit that he had been ” tinkering around” with Google Maps and created a small app that asked people for any feedback.

The game quickly exploded, and people never looked at Google Maps the old way again.

Today, more than 250,000 people follow the GeoGuessr tag on Twitch.

You can play for free for 20 minutes a day, but if you are addicted like everyone else and want to play more, you need to register to become a member.
