Aaron Rodgers Defends NFL Over Concussion Outrage, Says ‘We Have to Self-Monitor’

AARON RODGERS believes the NFL is doing everything it can when faced with a concussion.

And the Green Bay Packers quarterback thinks better self-control is needed.

American football was rocked by Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion last week.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback was carted off the field last Thursday with a head injury against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Just four days earlier, he re-entered the game against the Buffalo Bills despite stumbling while walking.

Tua was examined and found not to have suffered a concussion and was then allowed to continue playing.

The NFL and NFL PA are conducting a review of the league’s concussion protocols, with changes reportedly imminent.

Rodgers said in London on Friday he wasn’t sure what else could be done.

The Packers quarterback claimed, “I don’t know what else the NFL can do.

“I don’t always defend the NFL with every decision they make.

“There are independent people on the sidelines looking for these hits.

“I think you have to keep a closer eye on these special games.

“I just think we need to monitor ourselves and be smart too.

“Players want to be out there. But we have to think about our long-term health.”

Rodgers continued, “I think we all know the difference between being shaken and having a concussion.

“I’ve had a few on the field and there’s a difference between getting nailed and going to the sidelines where maybe your jaw or neck hurts a little bit, and actually having a concussion.

“Obviously you watched the game with Tua in the back and saw him kind of stumble after a goal.

“I think we all know what went on there.

“For Tua, I understand the predicament. They want to be out there and keep playing, but we all need to think about our long term health because we know the effects of CTE are well documented and there is research.

“I don’t know what else the league can do.

“We try to pull guys off the field. As I said before, there are several people who are looking for specific head injuries.

“We have to police ourselves.”

Rodgers also addressed the link between injuries and playing on artificial turf.

Green Bay plays on grass at Lambeau Field.

But their game against the New York Giants on Sunday will be played on artificial turf at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Rodgers said: “I think it’s interesting to look at some of the injury numbers on grass versus artificial grass.

“They are doing a good job, but the standard is not the same everywhere.

“If we’re going to keep doing artificial turf, maybe there needs to be a little more stringent standards, consistency, really on grass and on artificial turf.

“Tottenham’s pitch is obviously very important to them and we will play on what they put down.”
