AAA recommends washing your car periodically to avoid expensive rust damage – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – With snow on the ground, more winter weather on the roads and lower temperatures, roads in western Pennsylvania will be treated with salt and de-ice.

While that’s good news for morning and evening trips, it’s not good news for your car.

The chemicals used in de-icing devices could expose millions of Americans to costly car repairs due to rust.

AAA East Central is reminding drivers to stay proactive for the rest of this winter and that washing your vehicle regularly can prevent rust-related damage to brake lines, fuel tanks, exhaust systems and other parts of the vehicle.

“Regular winter car washes are important to avoid costly repairs on the road,” said Mike Hoshaw, vice president of auto service at AAA East Central. “Over time, rust can not only cause aesthetic problems, but also cause serious safety problems if the components underneath your vehicle are damaged.”

Rust damage is inevitable but drivers who take precautions can prevent it from becoming damage to the entire vehicle.

You should limit driving before, during, and after winter storms because staff members are applying de-icing treatments at their peak.

Wash the car and pay attention to the underbody as that will neutralize the road salts. It’s important to thoroughly wash the underbody one last time in the spring to wash away any remaining salt or de-icing agent.
