A terrified couple escapes death after an exploding jumbo jet engine crashes on their HOME in the dead of night

AN ELDERLY couple got lucky when part of an exploding jumbo jet engine fell and crashed into their roof.

Louis and Domenica Demaret were at their home near Liège, Belgium on Thursday night when they heard the sound of an airplane, which sounded like it was “flying lower than normal”.

Then they heard a loud bang nearby, which Louis initially thought was a thunderstorm.

A Boeing 747 had taken off from nearby Liege Airport en route to Malta when part of the bonnet came off.

Christian Delcourt, a spokesman for the airport, confirmed that the engine fell apart shortly after takeoff around midnight on Friday morning.

Domenica told Belgian broadcaster RTBF: “At one point I heard the sound of an airplane followed by a bang.

“So I went outside, I look at the front door, the alarm clock started ringing because the house was still vibrating.

“I went out the back, I couldn’t see anything.”

Remarkably, she then went back inside where, amazingly, her grandson was asleep through the noise upstairs.

The next morning, Domenica says, one of his neighbors came to him and asked him: “Did you see the rubble in your garden?”

Domenica said she burst into tears and shook when she realized what had happened.

They described what had happened as “a fear for their lives”.

The Air Atlanta flight was able to continue its flight to Malta where it is being repaired.

Incredibly, the falling plane’s engine caused only minor damage to the couple’s garage roof, and their car parked inside was untouched.

“It’s incredible,” said Louis. “We are in shock and wondering how this could have happened.”

I had a lucky escape

Louis said the debris was about six feet by three feet.

“I had a lucky escape,” he said. “If it falls and pierces the roof of the house, I’m in my room and I’ve got it in my bed.”

The couple contacted local police, who called the fire brigade and Liège Airport to clear the plane wreckage.

Another investigation has been launched into how the plane’s engine fell apart.

The Sun Online has reached out to Air Atlanta and Boeing for comment.

A similar incident happened last year when a plane took off from Maastricht in the Netherlands.

One of the engines exploded shortly after takeoff, showering the Dutch village of Meersen with metal fragments.

An elderly woman was injured by falling debris.

The Boeing 747 had to make an emergency landing at Liège Airport.
