Fourteen other ships are waiting in ports to see if the 186-metre Razoni reaches the Bosphorus safely.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba hailed the first trip as “relief for the world”.

The United Nations warned that 44 million people were facing starvation due to the drought and the Russian invasion that halted Ukraine’s grain exports.

The trip follows a landmark deal brokered in Turkey to lift Russia’s Black Sea blockade.

Secretary of State Liz Truss welcomed an “important first step” but warned: “There must be no repeat of the Russian shelling of the port of Odessa.”

Vessel tracking data showed the vessel, flying the Sierra Leonean flag, was sailing southeast of Odessa before heading for the Bosphorus at 10 knots.

Ukraine fears Russia will use the ships to chart safe routes through defensive minefields before attacking Odessa.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the departure of the ship as “very positive”.
