ODESSA, Texas (Nexstar) – Some people call it the ‘secret garden’ at the Permian high school.

Luis Trejo Fuentes, an art teacher at the school is leading the effort along with students and other teachers to clean it up for the holidays.

“We have a lot of students who are in dire straits and school is a safe space,” says Fuentes. “If they can’t get experience with [having] the joy of Christmas at home, we’re trying to give them that. ”

The garden needs a lot of help.

“This was started by a great group of people as a habitat… it went awry,” says art teacher Cheryl Stribling.

The garden is more than 20 years old.

“Many of the trees you see are mature 20 to 25 year old trees,” says art teacher Pam Burkhaulter.

Stribling guides us through the damage to the garden after the winter freeze.

“One of the prettiest trees here is half gone,” she pointed out.

To bring the garden back to life, they needed the community’s help.

Fuentes adds: “The plan is that we will clean up and turn it into an event space and turn it into an art gallery.

At this time of year, they’re trying to add more Christmas spirit.

“We’re really considering lighting it up for Christmas, any lights [for] outdoors, send them out on the street,” shared Stribling. “The kids want this to be a wonderland.”

Students like Alyssa Beresil say she wants to be a place where students feel welcome.

“Over the years I’ve been going around and just knocking it off and it’s always been a real killer,” Beseril said.

The hope is to bring light to the garden next year.

“I just want to be a place where students feel welcome,” she said.

Christmas decorations are currently being collected for the garden. The garden also needs volunteers to help clean up.

If you would like to donate your time or decorations, call (432) 456-0039 and asked for Mr. Fuentes.
