‘A real star’ – Kevin Campbell says Liverpool will be desperate to keep the ‘glue of the dressing room’ at the club

Arsenal the legend Kevin Campbell called James Milner “glue in the locker room” and believe it is “important” to Liverpool to keep him around.
Milner’s current contract with the Red Devils is due to expire next summer, but Jurgen Klopp’s side are said to be not ready to sever ties with him. Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed Klopp wants Milner to continue at Anfield, as he already has him in his plans for next season.
The Merseysiders are ready to offer him a one-year contract right now, but the England international has yet to respond to the offer, at least officially.
Serving the club diligently since 2015, the 36-year-old has become part of Liverpool’s folklore. He’s been instrumental in every silver title the Reds have won over the past seven years, always giving his best.
Campbell believes Milner is instrumental to the prosperity of the dressing room and has urged Klopp’s side to retain the versatile veteran. Discussing the former Manchester City player’s current situation at Liverpool, football expert says Football Insider:
“It is important to keep him. He is a real star of Liverpool. You can play him anywhere on the field and he will help you. To have someone with that experience, that fitness, someone who is culturally savvy, who can help and nurture young adults and young boys – that’s huge.
“He was the glue in that dressing room, and he was one of the club’s confidants in that squad. When you meet guys like that, you always yearn for them to be around. I wasn’t surprised at all to hear that he got that new contract.”
The experienced central midfielder has appeared in 24 games for Klopp’s men this season, recording three assists across all competitions.
Liverpool would be wise to extend Milner’s contract
The 36-year-old midfielder may not be the most aesthetically pleasing player at Anfield, but his importance to the team cannot be stressed enough. Since he switched from City of Manchester, the English player did nothing but put the needs of the Red Devils before his own. Milner played in every position Jurgen Klopp asked for, giving 100% in each role.
Given the quality that the 19-time England champions have in their ranks, letting the three-time Premier League winner leave is not out of the question. However, if the Reds are to promote selflessness, dedication and exemplary loyalty to the club, they must find a way to keep Milner at bay.
During his career at Liverpool, the 2018-19 Champions League winner featured in 274 matches across all competitions, scoring 26 goals and 44 assists. He won the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Supercup and a Club World Cup with the Merseyside club.
