An elderly man whose decomposing body was found after a mysterious call to a funeral home could have been dead for a year, police have claimed.
Connecticut police were alerted to the body after a tip from a local funeral home Tuesday.
The East Haven Memorial Funeral Home told police they received a call from someone inquiring about burials and cremations for someone who died in April 2021.
When the house advised the caller to contact the police, police said they hung up.
Just as police were preparing to launch an investigation, they received a call from someone asking how they could get a coroner to the house.
They responded to the home on Elm Street in East Haven, saying it appeared unoccupied, according to NBC Connecticut.
Police entered the home and found the body of an elderly man in an advanced state of decomposition upstairs in a bedroom, police said.
They said it was not clear why the death was not reported sooner but that the man’s son was fully cooperating with authorities.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy and the police are investigating.
East Haven Police said, “The relationship between the deceased and the person who reported the body was father/son.”
