A major supermarket and rival to Walmart is closing another location tomorrow – see if yours closes

A BIG supermarket chain is closing another location tomorrow as retail closures continue across the country.

Stop & Shop is a major Northeast grocery retailer operating more than 400 locations including locations in New York, the New England area and New Jersey.

Unfortunately for Stop & Shop customers, a store in Highland Park, NJ will close permanently on March 23.

The company made the decision to close the store due to financial underperformance.

“Stop & Shop conducts regular reviews of its store performance and these stores have been identified as underperforming compared to financial expectations,” a company spokesman said.

Luckily for local shoppers, Stop & Shop has other nearby shops in East Brunswick, Edison, Franklin and Piscataway.

The closure comes just months after Stop & Shop confirmed to The US Sun that a store in Brooklyn, New York’s Flatbush borough, had closed on January 19.

Another Stop & Shop closed in Paramus, NJ in January, while a location in Dayton, NJ fell victim to the retail apocalypse in February of this year.

Previously, in October 2022, Stop & Shop began weeding out its unprofitable locations when it closed its store in Queens, New York.

Also in October last year, Stop & Shop transformed three of its New York City stores with a $140 million upgrade program to improve the shopping experience.

These locations added luxury markets to match the cultural backgrounds of their local communities.

That meant extra kosher fish, dairy, meat and other products to cater to their Jewish customers.

Turkish, Spanish and Russian goods were also included in the product range.

MORE CLOSURES NATIONWIDE

Several other retailers have struggled to stay afloat during a phenomenon dubbed the “retail apocalypse.”

This includes grocers as well as fashion and household goods chains.

The legendary department store Macy’s will close 120 branches in 2023.

The chain has significantly reduced its fleet since 2020, when executives first announced the store’s plan to close hundreds of stores nationwide.

Walmart also has a series of closures slated for this spring, including a store in Hawaii that fell short of financial expectations.

Bed Bath & Beyond will also close 150 stores nationwide as it struggles to stay above its debt burden.

And three years after declaring bankruptcy, JCPenney is still closing stores — with just 670 locations remaining.

The surge in closures comes as shoppers feel the impact of high inflation on their budgets.

A shift to online shopping for convenience has also hurt brick-and-mortar stores.
