A couple sparks havoc in the air after a drunken row steered an EasyJet flight to Tenerife 300 miles off course onto a tiny island

An EASYJET flight from Manchester to Tenerife was forced to divert to the tiny Atlantic island of Porto Santo after a “drunk” couple on board began rowing.

Local reports said the pilot made the decision to divert to the island – 330 miles from Tenerife – and radioed police as he felt the pair were endangering flight safety.

Portuguese Public Security Police and immigration officials waited on the tarmac to remove the couple from the plane before continuing their journey to the Canary Islands after their unscheduled stop about an hour later.

The drama happened on Thursday afternoon, around three hours after the 2pm start in Manchester.

The plane landed at Porto Santo, a Portuguese island 27 miles northeast of Madeira in the North Atlantic, just after 6pm local time, and took off again for Tenerife South around 7pm after the two troublesome passengers were removed from the plane.

Their nationalities have not yet been published.

Also in September, a Ryanair flight from Manchester to Tenerife was diverted to Porto Santo and four passengers were taken away after a fight broke out on board.

A man described as “lazy drunk” reportedly urinated on a seat.

A passenger on the flight said the man intimidated staff and passengers, and a woman on board hit another passenger and had to be restrained in her seat.

In 2018, a drunk couple also forced another Ryanair plane flying the same route to make an unscheduled stop at Porto Santo so they could be handed over to the police and left on the island.

A “drunk” woman was arrested last month after a packed plane from London Gatwick to Madeira’s capital Funchal was forced to divert to Lisbon.

Police were filmed boarding the Wizz Air flight to take them away, amid local reports they had compromised the plane’s safety by attacking the crew and other passengers.

The Funchal-based newspaper Jornal da Madeira, quoting a Portuguese passenger she spoke to while the plane was still on the tarmac at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, reported at the time: “We were diverted to Lisbon because of a drunk passenger who started attack other passengers.

“She also attacked the crew.”
