A chilling warning China is sending to the world before declaring war over as it holds drills off Taiwan ahead of Pelosi’s visit

THE traditional warning China gives the world before going to war has been heard in official circles, the country’s state media reported.

The phrase “Don’t say we didn’t warn you” was issued before China’s last two major wars and is now being used in conducting military exercises ahead of Nancy Pelosi’s planned visit to Taiwan.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — a vocal China critic — is reportedly planning a visit to Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory.

China is conducting live-fire drills in waters near Pingtan Island in Fujian Province, which faces the self-governing island of Taiwan.

US warships have crashed into the South China Sea in recent days as tensions mount over the visit and fears it could lead to war.

The Institute for Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the country’s top think tank, discussed the visit, reports the Global Times.

The heavily nationalist paper said the phrase “don’t say we didn’t warn you” was a frequent occurrence in discussions.

The phrase was used in official media in 1962, before China went to war with India, and before the 1979 China-Vietnam conflict, says the Global Times.

Yang Mingjie, head of the institute, reiterated that sending fighter jets to intercept Pelosi’s plane remains an option.

“The US should not underestimate the determination of the Chinese people to defend core interests of sovereignty, integrity and security at all times,” he said.

It comes as a prominent Chinese commentator said he deleted a tweet warning of military reprisals should jets escort Pelosi on a visit to Taiwan after Twitter suspended his account.

Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, wrote: “Our fighter jets should use all obstructive tactics.

“If those are still ineffective, then I think shooting down Pelosi’s plane is okay too.”

Pelosi was originally scheduled to travel to Taipei in April but pulled out at the last minute after testing positive for coronavirus.

According to the Financial Times, she is expected to take part in the trip next month – the first by a major US politician to Taiwan in 25 years.

The 82-year-old refused to confirm if she would make the controversial visit, telling reporters on Wednesday: “I never talk about my travel plans. It’s a safety issue.”

Pelosi speculated that the US military feared their plane would be shot down.

In Taiwan, many have expressed support for Pelosi’s planned visit as the country holds large-scale defense drills, including air raid drills in major cities, with millions hiding in shelters.

On Thursday, the USS Ronald Reagan and her strike force arrived in the South China Sea in a move the Chinese Foreign Ministry described as the US “flexing its muscles”.
