Moechella, an event billed as the “Advocacy Festival Amplifying the Culture of Washington, DC,” held an event to celebrate June 16.

However, during a press conference, police said the event was not allowed.

“All it takes is one person to bring a gun to the deadly situation and in this case a 15-year-old lost his life,” Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said.

“My condolences go out to the family of the 15-year-old and to the others who were injured,” he said, adding that he would go to the hospital to check on the officer and his family.

Contee said it did not appear that there was an exchange of fire, but several firearms were recovered at the scene.

However, it is not known if these weapons were related to this particular incident.

According to the DC Police Department’s Twitter account, the shooting occurred in the 14th and U Street area.

Another tweet urged civilians to be on the lookout for a 5ft 4 suspect with curly hair and all black clothing.

“DO NOT CALL ACTION 911,” police advised.

Contee also stated that there would be a meeting with the Attorney General on whether the Moechella organizers would be held accountable.

“We definitely want to make sure people are held accountable when they hold unauthorized events in our city,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons why.”

Mayor Muriel Bowser repeated this statement when speaking to reporters.

“We have a child who was killed today at an event that did not have proper planning for the number of people that were here,” she said.

“The boss and I will continue to make sure we have the resources we need down these corridors, but we need some accountability here.”

Moechella’s Instagram page billed the event as a “peaceful demonstration” on June 16 featuring music artists on U Street, a historically black neighborhood in the city.
