81-year-old veterinarian sentenced to 3 years probation for rioting in the Capitol

One of the oldest people to face charges related to the January 6 Capitol riots, 81-year-old Army veteran Gary Wickersham, was sentenced on Tuesday to three years probation for illegally trespassing on the Capitol.

Wickersham also had to spend 90 days in house arrest and pay fines of $2,000 and $500 for damage caused to the building. After the riot, the FBI was informed that on January 6, Wickersham had texted a friend to say he was inside the Capitol. Later, agents spotted Wickersham through security footage from inside the building. In an interview with agents, Wickersham said he was allowed on Capitol Hill because he is a taxpayer and he believes law enforcement intentionally let the crowd support former President Donald. Trump could be arrested.

Before sentencing, Wickersham told the court “I shouldn’t have been there” and said he traveled from his home in Pennsylvania to Washington, DC, because when you get older and spend a long time at home , “you feel bored.” He begged for mercy and said he considered taking part in the riot “a dark stain compared to serving my country for three years going back to the ’60s.”

Judge Royce Lamberth, 78, told Wickersham he was “the first defendant I’ve ever been accused of being older than me for a while.” Lamberth also said he appreciates that Wickersham “has led the way for others to realize that the jigs are already pre-assembled”, and while he wishes “you hadn’t been there as long as you did… When you see what’s going on, you’re left, and that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing.” 81-year-old veterinarian sentenced to 3 years probation for rioting in the Capitol
