WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — At least six children injured when an SUV plowed through a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee were taken to a critical condition.
Waukesha police say that all told, at least five people were killed and more than 40 injured in Sunday’s tragedy.
Darrell Brooks Jr., 39 years old, of Milwaukee was arrested and police believe he acted alone.
The sheriff said police are bringing five counts of attempted murder against Brooks.
Brooks has a substantial criminal record. Most recently, he was charged with reckless endangerment, murder, domestic abuse and resisting arrest. Brooks was released on those charges on November 5.
Doctors said 18 patients between the ages of 3 and 16 were taken to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. They include three sets of siblings. Six children are in critical condition.
Police have identified the dead as Viginia Sorenson, 79, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52, Wilhelm Hospel, 81.
Authorities are asking the public to provide more footage of the incident.
Waukesha County Community Organization and the Way of Unity cooperated to raise funds for the victim’s family.
A candlelight vigil took place Monday night in Waukesha in memory of the victims and those currently hospitalized.
