50 were reportedly found dead in a 18-wheeler in San Antonio – 16 were taken to hospital, including four children

A total of 50 people are believed to have died, according to CNN, and 16 others were taken to the hospital after they were discovered in a semi-trailer truck near Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The horrific discovery was made yesterday near the intersection of Cassin Drive and Quintana Road in southwest San Antonio. A local official announced the news with a promise of anonymity, adding that authorities believed the bodies were those of migrants.

In a chilling photo taken from the scene, first responders can be seen next to the 18 wheel where the bodies were found.
Police Chief William McManus recounted how the abandoned truck was found by a city worker who heard calls for help from inside.
16 people, including four children, were reportedly taken to local hospitals.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg called it a “horrific human tragedy.”
“As far as we know there are 46 people who are no longer with us who had families and were probably trying to find a better life. And we have 16 people fighting for their lives in the hospital,” he said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, meanwhile, blamed President Joe Biden’s administration for the incident. He said “open borders” led to the tragedy.

According to The Independent, a San Antonio Fire Department official said “piles of bodies” were found inside the truck with no sign of water despite the stiflingly hot temperature.

“We shouldn’t open a truck and see piles of corpses inside. None of us come to work imagining it,” said San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

“None of these people were able to get themselves out of the truck, so they were still there waiting for help when we arrived. Too weak in the state to actually come out and help yourself.”

The Department of Homeland Security says it is investigating the incident.
The Washington Post says the truck found in San Antonio has registration numbers from the US and Texas Departments of Transportation. They added that state records matched the numbers to a man from the Alamo.

This man’s son-in-law, Isaac Limon, said the number on the truck was used fraudulently by those directing the smuggling operation.
“It was a perfect setup,” Isaac told the outlet.

“The truck is here. I’m looking at it right now. Sad to say, but he’s also a bit of a victim because people think he was.”
Let’s say rest in peace to all the people who lost their lives in this tragedy.
