DENVER (KDVR) – Fall colors are at their peak in the high country. The vegetation in the west can be at least an hour from the subway, and long car journeys are tiring. These five train tours let you sit back, relax, and gaze at the fall leaves as you leave the city behind.
Rocky Mountaineer
Departing from Union Station, the Rocky Mountaineer is a multi-day excursion that takes you from Denver to Moab and overnight in Glenwood Springs. The train heads west, where fall colors should be at their peak in mid-September to early October.
Californian Zephyr
En route from Chicago to San Francisco, the California Zephyr stops at Union Station before continuing toward Salt Lake City. If you have vacation days, check out the multi-day train ride that heads west near the fall foliage.
Georgetown Loop Railroad
Less than an hour from Denver, take a day trip by train from Georgetown to Silver Plume. You can book a fall-themed trip with rides like the Fall Colors Train, Pumpkinfest Train, Autumn Train, and Trick or Treat Train, which run throughout September and October.
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
An hour and a half from Denver is one of Colorado’s most popular activities. The train goes to the top of Pikes Peak. Drive through the Pikes National Forest and enjoy the fall colors while learning the historical background of the ride.
Royal Route Railroad
A little further from Denver is the Royal Route Railroad, which chugs along the Arkansas River. The train travels through rocky terrain rather than fall colors, but is still a way to celebrate the season. The train ride offers Oktoberfest train rides and serves German bratwurst with sauerkraut, spaetzle, mustard, pickled onions and a pretzel.
Autumn is just beginning. Book a tour before the best colors are gone.
