Kolkata Knight Riders is one of the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League History. KKR has been a part of every season IPL has played so far. They are one of three teams that have won the championship trophy multiple times. Most recently, Kolkata Knight Riders finished second at IPL 2021.
Over the past 14 years, some of the greatest players in cricket history such as Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Gautam Gambhir, Shane Bond and several others have been part of the KKR team.
While the aforementioned names played many games for Kolkata Knight Riders, the following 5 never got a chance to play for KKR despite earning contracts from the Kolkata based franchise.
#1 Mitchell Starc – Signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018
Kolkata Knight Riders broke the bank at IPL 2018 Mega Auction and signed all-powerful Australian bowler Mitchell Starc for a whopping 9.40 crore. He was KKR’s most expensive signing at that auction.
However, Starc was unable to participate in IPL 2018 due to a stress fracture. Tom Curran has replaced him on the team.
#2 Yasir Arafat – Privately signed by Shah Rukh Khan before IPL 2009
Not many fans know that Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan personally signed Pakistani all-rounder Yasir Arafat before the 2009 IPL season. He may have played multiple seasons for KKR. .
However, Arafat was unable to make his IPL debut as BCCI banned Pakistani players from participating in the IPL before the second season started.
#3 Anrich Nortje – Signed by KKR in 2019
Anrich Nortje is one of the top fast pitchers in world cricket today. The capital Delhi has kept him ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega auction.
Before Nortje became a famous player, Kolkata Knight Riders signed him with a base price of 20 lakh Yen at the 2019 IPL Auction. But before he could debut, Nortje suffered a shoulder injury. and was eventually replaced by Matt Kelly.
#4 Sanju Samson – 2012 IPL Champion with KKR
Current Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson made his IPL debut in 2013 for the Jaipur-based franchise. Prior to that season, he lifted the IPL trophy with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012.
Interestingly KKR did not keep him for the 2013 season. RR signed him then and now he is one of the top stars of Indian cricket.
#5 Cameron Delport – Signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018
Kolkata Knight Riders signed South African all-rounder Cameron Delport for a base price of 30 lakh at IPL Mega Auction 2018. Although Delport was a top quality T20 player, he was not got the chance to play for KKR in 2018.
