5 Indian pitchers won the Man of the Match at the launch of T20I

Winning the Man of the Match at the launch of T20I is every cricketer’s dream. Performing well in a format like T20 is not for everyone, especially for bowlers. The bowlers are more at risk in T20I than in the ODI and Test, thus making the bowlers’ job a bit more difficult.

However, not every bowler is pressured to play his or her first T20I match. Over the past 17 years, there have been many bowlers who not only excelled, but also won the Player of the Year award on their T20 international debut.

In this article, we take a look at five Indian pitchers who have accomplished this feat in T20I cricket history.

#1 Pragyan Ojha, 2009

Former Indian handwheeler Pragyan Ojha started his T20I career at the big stage of the ICC T20 World Cup. Ojha wore India’s T20I jersey for the first time during the group stage match of the 2009 T20 World Cup against Bangladesh in Nottingham.

India beat first and scored 180/5 in 20 passes. In the second inning, Pragyan Ojha took four points and helped India win with 25 runs. Ojha conceded just 21 times in his four passes and was knocked out by Junaid Siddique, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza.

#2 Axar Patel, 2015

Axar Patel is an all-rounder, but has played mainly as a pitcher for Team India so far. He won the Man of the Match award on his T20I debut for his outstanding 3/17 match against Zimbabwe.

India aims to run 179 turns for African opponents in a bilateral series match in Harare. Patel throws four economy balls, gives away only 17 times and is disqualified Hamilton Masakadza, Elton Chigumbura and Sikandar Raza.

#3 Barinder Sran, 2016

Another Indian bowler who made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe and won the Best Man award was Barinder Sran. The left-hander had a four-stroke on his debut and helped India limit Zimbabwe 99/9 in 20 rounds.

Sran returned with a 4/10 figure in four stints. He picked up the squiggles of Chamu Chibhabha, Hamilton Masakadza, Sikandar Raza and Tinotenda Mutombodzi in his first T20I game.

#4 Navdeep Saini, 2019

Haryana-born fast pitcher Navdeep Saini is the only Indian pitcher to have won the Best Man award on his T20I debut against the T20 World Cup champions. Saini achieved the feat against the West Indies in 2019.

Playing at Lauderhill, Saini played a fiery match 3/17 as India kept the West Indies down to 95/9. Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer were Saini’s first three victims of T20I cricket.

Patel was India’s best pitcher and was named Man of the Match after India beat New Zealand by seven catches. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips were victims of Harshal in Ranchi.
