PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An 18-year-old man is charged with leading police in a car chase through the Sorrows Tunnel and crashing into another car inside.

A witness inside the tunnel captured the crash on his dash cam and said it all happened in a matter of seconds.
“I looked in the left rearview mirror and saw a car rushing from the right to the left lane at an absurd speed through the tunnel. I estimate about 65 to 70 miles per hour,” said Thomas Maryanski. “He passed me while traveling at that speed and realized that the cars ahead, about 30 meters away, started to brake hard. Everyone started to slow down and he slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. He lost control and crashed into a car in the right lane. He bounced back and hit the wall and stopped.”
A few seconds later, the man got out of the car and started running out of the tunnel, Maryanski said.
“He reached for something in his belt, took off his shoes and started running towards the exit of the tunnel. That’s when the police cars showed up and jumped out and yelled, “Stop, stop.”
Police said a soldier then heard what he believed to be a gunshot.
“The soldier then strategically exited the tunnel and subsequently located the suspect on the run,” police said in a statement.

When police searched the scene, they found a gun and a used shell casing inside the weapon.
The 18-year-old was later identified as Cash Jones. He is facing a list of charges, including careless driving, carrying a firearm without a license and fleeing or attempting to evade a police officer.
“Then a couple of police officers who went back into the tunnel and secured the scene, came to us and said it was going to be a while, a long time,” Maryanski said. “He (an officer) spoke because the suspect shot at one of our officers.”
The crash closed the tunnel for about two hours. Maryanski said the whole incident could have been much worse.
“It could be a bunch of 10 to 15 cars that would be horrible,” says Maryanski.
Police said a woman was driving the vehicle that was hit by the suspect. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Polioce. The suspect also suffered minor injuries.
Police added that Jones and his car reeked of marijuana.
Jones is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
