16 years have passed since Big Brother

IT was a reality TV romance that no one expected would last once they were out in the open.

In the Big Brother house, he was the laid-back, personable Scouser, while she was the performing arts student who was cast as the villain and voted out after just four weeks.

But 16 years – and four children later – Grace Adams-Short and Mikey Dalton proved they were real all along.

After their new arrival – 14-week-old Atticus – Grace, 36, reveals they’re more in love than ever.

She says: “We still bounce off each other like we did on day one. Of course sometimes we drive each other crazy like any other couple but we are best friends and now we have the kids it’s even deeper.

“Seeing what a good father Mikey is made him even more attractive to me.”

Real estate developer Mikey, 38, adds he’s still madly into Grace.

He says: “Grace just gets better with age, although she hasn’t aged at all. I tell her every day how good she looks.”

Along with AtticusThe couple have Georgiana, ten, Spencer, six, and Allegra, three, and live together her home in Liverpool is pretty hectic.

In fact, Grace says she and Mikey are often like ships sailing by in the night. But Mikey has some thoughts on why their relationship has stood the test of time.

He says: “We often don’t have time for each other. I go to work very early and when I come back I spend a few hours with the kids before we bathe and go to bed.

“But ultimately we both know that we want the same things from life and we want the same things for our children.

“You don’t have to agree on everything; Marriage is not about always having the same thoughts. But as long as you agree on the same direction, everything is fine.”

It was the summer of 2006 when Grace and Mikey entered Big Brother’s house to play the classic seventh series.

Roommates were eventual winner Pete Bennett, Imogen Thomas and the late Nikki Grahame.

Grace sees at first glance why she and Mikey make an unlikely pair. She says: “It was definitely the north-south divide that made us very different.

“I mean I’ve never been to Liverpool or even had any idea where it’s located. I thought, “Is it in Scotland?”.

“But a week in this house was so intense it felt like a month. We’d rushed the honeymoon and the ups and downs in this pressure cooker.

“That’s how we got to know each other very quickly.”

Grace was evicted on Day 30 after being nominated alongside Nikki by new girl Susie Verrico, who was the only one allowed to vote that week.

She received 87.9 percent of the vote and threw a glass of water at Susie as she left the house. Though she now describes it as “panto,” Grace recalls her shock at realizing she’d become the show’s hate figure after hearing the boos and chants from the crowd outside.

She then took advice from series one “Nasty” Nick Bateman and played a sly game on the outside, using her reputation for being “bitchy” to her advantage.

She says: “I remember seeing the stack of newspapers when I came out and it was all ‘Big Brother Bitch’ and I was like ‘What the hell?’

“But I spoke to Nasty Nick and he told me it was all a lot of fun and to just enjoy it, which I ended up doing. I got to play the villain in panto every year.”

In the noughties, Big Brother was a date TV that regularly drew eight million viewers, and Grace and Mikey emerged into a world of magazine deals and lucrative opportunities.

They got engaged four months after the show and were in a long-distance relationship for two and a half years before marrying in 2009 and settling together in Liverpool.

Grace, originally from Plymouth, says: “I love it up here. We live in a really nice area, the kids are in a great school and everyone is happy.

“Our life is very different now. We’re so busy with the kids that we were glad to step out of the spotlight.”

Today, Mikey is involved in real estate development while Grace has sold her performing arts academy to focus fully on raising the children. And although 16 years have passed since Big Brother, the couple is still recognized.

Grace says, “People say, ‘How do I know you?’ They recognize us, but think they know us from university. Or they say, “Did you date so-and-so?”.

“I never really know what to say because I think it sounds a little crazy when I say, ‘I was actually on Big Brother.’ But one time Georgiana said, ‘She’s from Big Brother,’ because I think she was so fed up they’re guessing.”

Mikey says he’s often asked how they fared financially after Big Brother.

He adds: “People want to know how much money we got, but my answer is always the same.

“I have a wife and children, and you can’t buy that.”
