A FAMILY got quite the surprise while on vacation when they caught a glimpse of a monstrous 15-foot great white shark.

The chilling encounter happened Monday while the Iowa family of five was fishing on a charter boat and learning how locals catch lobsters near Cape Cop, Massachusetts.

David Stamatis – the owner of Billingate Charters, a guide fishing company – described the exciting encounter as an “incredible bonus”.

“Holy smokers, this thing is huge, dude. That’s about 15 feet! This thing is huge,” a man can be heard saying in a video posted to the company’s Facebook page.

Stamatis told Boston.com that the group had just finished fishing for striped bass and were turning to the lobster portion of the trip when the shark approached nearby.

“They loved it, it made their journey. Not only did they catch some fish and lobster for dinner, that was an incredible bonus,” Stamatis told the outlet.

“It’s incredibly satisfying to be able to show people so many natural resources.

“This is a majestic, beautiful, massive animal and to see it up close is a once in a lifetime event for these people. If I get to be there, it’s a lot more rewarding,” he added.

Stamatis said he had four shark encounters last year, but Monday was the earliest he has seen a great white in the season.

Normally, the first shark sighting doesn’t happen until July, the fisherman said.

The latest shark encounter comes as sightings across the country were reported earlier than usual.

They revealed that almost all of the sightings were teenagers.

Barbara Block, a professor at Stanford University, estimated that about 12 years ago there were about 219 adult and juvenile great white sharks off the state’s central coast.

She believes there is a “stable and robust” population of about 300 non-juvenile great white sharks, USA Today reported.

George Burgess, the former director of the Florida Shark Research Program, predicted that there are about 2,000 great whites along the California coast.

Marine biology professor Chris Lowe says Southern California is their nursery and San Diego has become a hotspot for the beasts.

Several great white sharks have been sighted off the east coast this year.

A monstrous beast was found earlier this month near Florida’s Indian River lagoon system.
