The blast happened on the road between Bandiagara and Goundaka in the Mopti area in the early afternoon, a security source said.

The region is considered a hotbed of jihadist violence.

Previously, the police and local sources gave a preliminary figure of 10 dead and many seriously injured.

Moussa Housseyni, from the local Bandiagara Youth Association, said: “We have just brought nine bodies to the clinic. And it’s not over yet.”

Mali has long grappled with a jihadist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
