10 people injured in pile of 73 vehicles in Pennsylvania during winter storm – CBS Pittsburgh

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. (AP) – State police say 10 people were injured in a collision with 73 vehicles on a central Pennsylvania highway during a late-winter storm over the weekend, but no serious injuries occurred. live.
Trooper Megan Ammerman said the crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday on PA 581 in Cumberland County.

Ammerman said 10 people suffered mild to moderate injuries and were transported to hospital for evaluation and treatment. Investigators at the scene determined that about 43 of the 73 vehicles were damaged, police said. The highway was closed for about four hours during the investigation.
WHTM-TV said drivers and other witnesses reported loss of space before the crash.

Jason Rosnick told the station: “We were going under the tunnel and all of a sudden there was a white screen. “I stepped on the brake and suddenly there was no more traction. I got hit from behind and hit the person in front and hit the fence, and over the next five minutes, there were more and more collisions. ”
WCAU-TV reports that temperatures in the area ranged from the lower to mid-20s, below freezing, with gusts of up to 30 to 40 mph (50-60 km/h) leading to reduced visibility .
The Capital Area Transit bus picked up the uninjured drivers and passengers and took them to the New Cumberland Borough fire department to warm up and reunite with their families, WHTM-TV reported. Tractor trucks were dispatched to the scene to assist in the cleanup.
