A Jan. 6 rioter who used to work for the FBI reportedly incited crowds by telling them to “hang the traitors,” according to court filings released Thursday by the US Department of Justice (DOJ). became.
Thomas Caldwell, 65, of Virginia, faces charges of conspiracy and obstruction for his role in the US Capitol riots. Caldwell is a member of the far-right, anti-government group Oath Keepers and is believed by some to have been one of the masterminds of the attack on the Capitol that day.
Caldwell is reportedly known to other members of the Oath Keepers as “Commander Tom”. Caldwell, a former Navy officer, is also a former FBI employee and once had a “top secret” level security clearance.
DOJ filings revealed previously unknown details about Caldwell’s behavior on Jan. 6, including alleged statements he made when describing his actions during the riots. Although the DOJ did not specify who these statements were intended for, they were reportedly delivered electronically by Caldwell.
“Then we heard [former Vice President] Pence fucked us. Wr [sic] had over a million people [sic] here…so I grabbed my American flag and said let’s take the damn capital,” was one of Caldwell’s alleged statements. “So people started rushing forward and climbing the scaffolding outside, so I said let’s [sic] storm the place and hang the traitors.”
“Everyone thought it was a good idea, so we did it,” Caldwell continued.
“People in front of me broke through the doors and started messing with the pigs who broke in and ran,” it continued. “Then we started stealing the police shield ad [sic] Throw fire extinguisher through window. It was a great time.”
A previous court filing said Caldwell tried to buy a camouflaged shotgun in the months leading up to the riot. He also reportedly discussed where to stay in Washington DC during the attack, telling another Oath Keeper that “this is a good spot and would allow us to hunt at night if we wanted to,” in reference to one nearby hotel.
Despite the DOJ’s evidence against him, both Caldwell and his defense team continue to plead his innocence. That said his lawyer David Fischer news week in March that Caldwell “strongly believes he is innocent.”
The defense has stated that Caldwell was allegedly unable to take part in the riot due to his physical limitations. Fischer described his client as an “old cripple” who used an American flag as a crutch in the attack.
Caldwell is reportedly disabled and has had multiple spinal surgeries.
While Caldwell admitted to having been at the Capitol that day and the rioters with the phrase “Let’s go. Patriots forward!” his attorneys argued that he could not be held responsible for the entire actions of the Oath Keepers.
An additional statement from the DOJ revealed that Caldwell claimed he sat outside because his “back was killing me.” He added that he could not access the Capitol steps due to the lack of railings.
Caldwell was released on bail in March on ill health and is currently under house arrest at his home in Virginia.
